what do I think makes a good marriage?

I was recently asked by my soon to be sister-in-law for all my marriage advice.  I laughed and told her I needed like a week (or month!) to think about it and then time to write out a blog post to gather all my thoughts and dish out all my expertise thoughts.  So because love is in the air with Valentine's Day being tomorrow I decided to finally post it :) ....

How good your marriage is, is only controlled by you and your husband.  No one else can make your marriage work.  You two are the only ones who can and need to put the effort in, to reap the rewards.  So that being said, here is what I've learned in my short 7 years of marriage....

pray together and often.
Pick a time when you are together to just get on your knees and pour your hearts out to God.  Praying together is a very intimate thing.  You get to know someone's heart really quick when you pray together.   The best time we've found is right before we go to sleep.  No distractions, just us and God.

have regular dates.
This is very easy when you are newlyweds because well frankly you don't have kids in the picture to make this a little more difficult.  So take advantage of your "free time" and date each other once a week if money allows.  Now once kids come into the picture this is just as, if not MUCH more important.  Date night might look a little different but make it happen.  I know babysitters are expensive.....seriously when did the rate per hour increase to $10+?!  I remember getting paid between $2-$5/hour when I was babysitting!  As often as you can afford it, pay that babysitter and get out of the house just the two of you!  Your marriage will be much obliged.  Your kids will survive without you for a night, I promise.  And if you can't stand to leave your kids to spend some time with your first love, than we should talk.  Your hubby should always come before your kids.  Once they are all grown up and out of the house he's all you have left :)  Back to the money part there are ways around spending out the wazoo to get a date night with your hubby.  Our budget doesn't have much wiggle room for $10/hour babysitters (every once in a while, yes but not weekly or even monthly!)  So I talked to my friend Becky and we swap babysitting each others kids twice a month.  They'll bring their kiddos over to our house and then head out for date night and we'll do the same another night that month.  Neither of us has family closer than 16 hours away (who would gladly babysit if they were close enough) so it's a perfect set up.  Another idea is to have a date night at home!  Yep it's possible.  We do this quite often.  Give the kiddos supper a little early and then to bed a littler earlier than usual and then voila!  we have the evening to ourselves.  We will either order take out or I'll cook a special meal for the two of us.  We'll eat in front of the fireplace or in the summer out on the back porch.  The point is to just make it a point to have time just the two of you.

have sex....a lot.
yup I said it.  so get after it.  no excuses.  God made sex for a marriage for a reason (and not JUST to procreate).  and you know practice makes perfect :)  haha ok I'm done now.

never EVER put your spouse down in public.
you might've just had the biggest fight of your life but that fight is between you and him.  Not you, him and your mom, girlfriend, coworker, kids, sister, cashier at target etc.  just turn it around, do you want him complaining about you to all his friends coworkers, mom?  no.  So always build him up in public.  Encourage him in public.  Respect him and his decisions in public.  Once you are married, you are a team.  Not just two people living their lives parallel to each other but a man and a woman coming together to share their lives together and work through things together and make decisions as a unit.

Build him up.
Tell him the things about him that you really appreciate.  Everyone likes a compliment and so many times we as women are so concerned with our husbands complimenting us that we forget that they really need that too.  Words of affirmation is a number one love language for many guys.  So what better way to love your husband then in a form that he receives best!

show affection in front of your children.
Ok you may not have children yet but if/when you do this is a good one.  When Tyler comes home from work, no matter if I'm the first person to greet him at the door or the last he always "greets" me first before the boys.  He gives me a kiss and then gives his attention to the boys.  I think it's very important not only for us to keep each other as the first priority as much as we can but also for our kids to see us keeping each other as first in line.  Kids may act grossed out seeing mom and dad kiss or give affection but deep down it makes them feel safe and secure.  They know that mommy and daddy love each other and they can see it first hand.

don't live parallel lives.
Meaning you live in the same house but are doing completely different things and not including each other in on what you are doing, how you are feeling about it, how your day was, what you are working on at work etc.  Most couples aren't like Jim and Pam and work side by side all day long.  Most are doing completely different jobs throughout the entire day and then together in the evenings.  Tell each other about your job and listen intently.  Try to understand.  At Tyler's first job I had no idea what he ever did and most of it was mathematical lingo that I didn't understand but I really tried to understand.  I asked a lot of questions and was interested in his day.  That's all we want is for our spouse to take interest in how we spent our day. So talk to each other about your days.  Tell MORE than just the bare minimum of your day. Your lives need to be constantly crisscrossing and interacting.

So that's my two cents :)

Have a Happy Valentine's Day with the one(s) you LOVE!

embrace the camera: Marshall's edition!

My mom was here with us for a week.....can I get a woot woot?!
It was awesome.  We had a great time and she helped me out so much!

While she was here we made sure to sneak away one evening for a date night
{free babysitting!}

It was a good time.  Ate some good food, ran into some great friends and then finished
off doing a little Christmas shopping {sans kids = time to actually browse}

So here was a little shopping extravaganza at Marshall's.  :)
Me and the Mr. Classy picture in front of a random mirror.
anything to embrace the camera right?

Let me give you all a bit of background info before the next pictures.
My brother, sister, brother in law and us decided that instead of all getting
each other gifts this year we would draw names.  So we did that and then I thought
it would be fun to through in an extra loop.  Some part of the present has to be brown or have brown on it.  Somewhere.

Soooo...Tyler and I were strolling hand in hand through Marshall's when I spotted some brown
hangers.  Thought I'd take a picture and send it to Hope saying she was getting those for Christmas :)
and the fun just spiraled from there!
We found this fun aisle and enjoyed taking fun pictures with creative captions
to both Hope and Derek giving them hints as to what they would
be unwrapping come Christmas Eve. :)

"hoo hoo wants an owl?!"  "stop monkeying around already"
"Tyler is 'thinking' about getting this for Hope"  "Marie.  With the brown candlestick.  In aisle 13." :)

and....my husband can't make a normal face.
but I love him anyway :)

linking up with emily today!

{six years}

I know I say this every year but, has it really been 6 years already?!
I guess times flies when you're havin' fun, right?

These past 6 years have been the best of my life.  It's been quite the adventure to say the least and life has taken us in directions I never could've imagined.  But those things are what have brought us closer together over the years.  I have been so incredibly blessed to marry a man like Tyler.  I saw this print on pinterest and it is so true.
I married a man who I would be incredibly proud if our sons turned out exactly like him.
I pray they do.
They have such an amazing example of what a Godly man looks like.

Now for a walk down memory lane....

Happy Anniversary, Tyler!  Each year just keeps getting better and better and I couldn't have asked for anyone better to spend the rest of my life with!

pack 2 boxes....sit down for 10 minutes - repeat

First of all I'm aware that my header is gone.  we're working on it.  not sure what happened.  if you are able to see it, would you let me know please?  I'm guessing everyone is seeing the same black rectangle with the exclamation mark in the middle.  bear with me....I'll have a pretty header back up there soon!
now onto my post....

yep, that's right we're busy (or slowly) packing boxes over here
because.....we bought a house!
we close this thursday and move in on saturday!
wowzers!
praying that this go around as home owners is a little less stressful than last time!
man that basement in our old house was a nightmare.
but we survived and fixed it just in time to move :)
don'tcha just love how most people "fix up" their house in order to move?
yeah we were one of them.

in a way it's been nice renting for the past year
we haven't had to do any of our own maintenance like
mowing, fixing leaky faucets, etc.
it'll be so fun to have a yard again for Linc man and baby brother to play in
AND a huge playground/soccer field just behind our backyard!
AND I'm so ready to NOT have white walls anymore!  yippee!

we've been busy packing boxes, signing papers, getting inspections, setting up utilities, living daily life with a 2 year old, packing more boxes, taking a break, eating a snack (or 2!) and packing some more!
for those of you who didn't know about our little "situation" we ran into some problems
getting pre approved for a loan.  Apparently I had good credit (but no income) so we couldn't
use mine, and since we don't use credit cards and it had been over a year since we sold our last house,
Tyler's credit score had expired.
So we had some extra waiting to do, putting Tyler on as an authorized user onto my accounts,
well.....er...... the ONE account that I still had and then start spending some money to get a score for him.

Well wanna guess where that one credit card of mine was from?
Well like I said, we don't use credit cards......
so the only reason I've ever opened a store credit card was for the discount or awesome coupons.
and the only one that I still had was to Victoria's Secret.
(did you know that if you have their credit card, you get awesome coupons in the mail for free undies?!)
Yes my husband now has his own Victoria's Secret card.
LOL!
Seriously, though I've given him such a hard time about it.

Well low and behold that card came through for us!
Tyler got a credit score and that same day we found our house!

So I guess we now have 2 reasons to thank Victoria's Secret....
For baby brother :)
and
for giving Tyler a credit score so we can buy a house!

Well I hope that gave you all a good laugh.....
my 10 minutes of resting is up and I'm off to pack 2 more boxes!

Check back soon for a 30 week update on baby brother!

dinner at eight

"dinner at eight" is something that rebekah from a bit of sunshine and her friend andi started.
they started it as a way of being more intentional of dating their husbands during this busy season of life with little kiddos running around the house and a small date night budget.
the idea is to, every once in awhile, put the kids to bed early and have an "at home" dinner date with your hubby.  She has monthly themes that they do and has started posting them and I've decided this is something we should start doing.

this months theme was "Takeout for Two."  Since I remembered late in the month to do it, I didn't have much time to prepare but we had a fun night anyways.

This last monday night was our "date night."  Since it was rainy and cold outside, I decided to just spread a blanket out on the living room floor, propped up some pillows against the toy box coffee table and we had our take out.  Tyler chose chipotle as his takeout and I had none other than the delicious chicken fajita rollup from Applebees (with extra mexi-ranch sauce of course).

Tyler took on the task of giving Linc-man a bath at 7:30 while I went to get our takeout.  I had pre-ordered everything so it was all ready when I got there.  Also had to stop at the gas station nearby to get milk for Linc and that's how I ended up with our sugar cookies for dessert :)

We ate and relaxed while watching one of our favorite shows, "How I Met Your Mother"
then spent the evening sorting through housing listings to get some narrowed down.

These are all blurry but it was funny trying to take a picture of Tyler stuffing the whole cookie in his mouth.  I have such a talented hubby :)

We had a great evening talking, relaxing and laughing.  It was good.  Although I think we decided that relaxing on the floor - no matter how many pillows you have- isn't very comfortable for this preggo momma and my "day after running 22 miles" hubby.  Either that or we're just getting too old!

I'm really going to try to keep up with these monthly "dinner at eight" dates.  I loved this one and hopefully we'll be able to get in a few more before this baby decides to come!

young love

So I don't think I've ever done a post on how the Mr. and I met.  I've read a couple other blogs who have written our their "love story" and thought it'd be fun to do a post on ours.

Background info:
We both grew up on farms outside of two small towns.

Little did we know we grew up 6 miles down the road from each other but since we went to different churches and schools, never met.  Until.....

It was the summer before my freshman year of high school (2000) and we were both camp counselors for a Christian Day Camp that was right by my house (put on by Tyler's pastor and his wife).  I thought he was super cute of course.  I had my own group of elementary age girls and he was in charge of the canoes.  So here we are, awkward as ever, sitting on the dock just the two of us with all the girls in their canoes paddling away.  There was one canoe left so he asked if I wanted to join him.  Of course I did!  But since we were both so shy, neither of us said hardly a word the whole time!  I was in the front so he couldn't see me blushing.  Talk about awkward!

But little did I know, before that he had spotted me practicing hurdles on the Aurora Track at school (since my little school didn't have a track, the team came a couple times to actually practice on a track-yeah we are cool like that).  I didn't know this but he started asking around to find out who I was...

So later that summer that same Christian Camp puts on a "Travel Camp" for highschool-ers and we both went.  I was a little obsessed with trying to get to know him.  My friends were so kind and made fun of me (you know who you are).  Tyler had a shirt on one day and all it said on it was "What?" in huge letters and so it became so funny for my friends to ask me, "Hey Marie, 'What?' is over there?!"  Anyways, at one point I convinced my friend Kelly to come with me as we followed close behind him and his friends on a hike up a small mountain at Jenny Lake.  We were running late to get back to the bus so we started running.  Well my sissy ankle gave out on a rock and I couldn't walk anymore.  Him and his two friends were kind enough to carry me piggyback the rest of the way down.

So camp ended and my cousin Matt was gracious enough to set up a double date for us.  First date, we went mini golfing, batting cages and finished off the night with some DQ and a movie.  We continued to date for a couple months, went to homecoming together, he would sneak into my high school and place a gatorade in my locker for my volleyball game that night, he left a poem in my car (which happened to be my families old mini van, you're all jealous just admit it!) and then I broke his heart and dumped him.  I know your thinking, what in the world, why would you break up with a sweet guy like that!?!  I don't know.  I just knew I wasn't ready for a serious relationship and since he was a senior, he was looking for more serious than I was looking for at the time.  Everyone told me I made a huge mistake and wouldn't find a guy like him again.  I ignored them, but secretly knew they were right, and finished out my sophomore year.

Fast forward to middle of my Junior year (Tyler is now a freshman in college at Wichita State University, 4 hours away).  This was back when MSN messenger was the cool thing to do (before Facebook and everything, old school, I know!)  We started chatting on there a lot.  I started to realize how much I missed him and that I really did make a huge mistake but I didn't want to admit it.  Meanwhile he hasn't given up on me but has started thinking that I wasn't ever going to come around so he tried one last time and asked if I would ever be interested in dating again otherwise he was going to start dating this other girl at college.  Gave me the ultimatum basically!  Well I didn't let that opportunity pass and I told him yes!  He came back for my Jr prom and the rest is history....

Jr. Prom

Thought I'd include this one for those of you who have never seen Tyler with any hair.  Yes this was when he was in college and yes I thought it was super cute!

Sr. Prom (I absolutely loved my dress!)

More of the shaggy hair

And then he cut it short

We dated throughout the rest of high school and since I was convinced that I didn't want to just "follow" him to Wichita State, I did my own thing and went to Hastings College to play volleyball.  That only lasted for a year before we got engaged and married 6 months later! Yes I was 19 years old.

On our honeymoon cruise!

I moved down to Wichita with him, he had a year left of school and I had 3 1/2.  We lived in the basement apartment of some friends from church and loved it!  It was small and cheap, we started out only paying $250 for rent and no utilities! Doesn't get much better than that!

So that's our little love story.

30 Day Challenge for Wives {day 1}

I just read about this challenge over at "We are THAT family" and thought it's really cool!  So from today on for the next 30 days I'll be posting the daily challenges that are posted at "reviveourhearts.com."  I know I can't wait to start this challenge, who else is in with me?!  Even if you think your marriage is right where you want it, try and do it anyway.  Marriage is something that needs continual love and care.  So before I start babbling on and on here is the challenge for today (May 17):

Day One:
"The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life." Prov. 31:11-12
************************************************************************************
To refresh your memory...here's the 30-Day Encouragement Challenge...for the next 30 days:
* You can't say anything negative about your husband ...to your husband...or to anyone else, about your husband.
* Say something that you admire or appreciate about your husband...to your husband...and to someone else, about your husband!
*************************************************************************************
To help you get started, have you ever thanked your husband for "choosing you" above all other women? He found you attractive as a person, and appreciated you. Though many circumstances in your marriage may have changed, let your husband know that you are glad God led you together, and that you want to be a blessing to him for the rest of your marriage. Let him know that he can trust you to be in his corner.
One of the best opportunities to express your gratitude is first thing in the morning. How do you greet your husband each morning? Is he confident in your love? Give him a "wake up call" that he'll never forget-a big "I love you" and an "I'm so glad I'm your wife!"

I'm starting this without Tyler knowing and I'll probably get away with doing it all secretly, unless I flat out tell him, since he hardly ever reads my blog :)  Love you despite your lack of reading of my blog, honey.

Oh and leave a comment letting me know if you're doing this, just cause it's fun to know other people who are joining in!  (ok you don't HAVE to leave a comment but it'd be fun for me if you did!)

Hope you all are having a fabulous Monday!

I was 19 he was 21...

I saw this on Sarah's blog this morning and it made me cry and I had to repost it.  This was Tyler and I,  5 1/2 years ago when he proposed.  I was 19 and he was 21.  It was hard and we knew it would be, but it was the best time of my life and it just keeps getting better!  We were literally livin' on love (we were so broke it's not even funny) but I wouldn't go back and change a single thing!

"it was harder than we dreamed, but that's what the promise is for...."

...I married my best friend!!  I can hardly believe we're already at the 5 year mark!  These 5 years have flown by so fast.  Seems just like yesterday that we were in high school and met while counselors at CRC day camp, then got to know each other better on Travel Camp and the rest, well that's history.  I was a young 19 years old when I said "I do" and both of us were still in college but I wouldn't change a thing.  That first year of marriage we were truly "livin' on love" because we were so poor!  We were lucky enough to get to live in The Neill's basement apartment and have truly been blessed as we got to know them and became great friends.  It only seems fit that we get to stay in that same basement apartment this weekend when we visit them and all our friends in Wichita!  We get to relive the good ole days, only this time with a 1 1/2 year old!

So I asked Tyler if he would like to make his first "guest appearance" on the blog and write a post about our 5th Anniversary and he said he couldn't because it would be too much pressure to make a first appearance for that special of a post so instead I copied my friend Kendra's idea that she did for their 5th anniversary and asked him questions like she asked her husband, Rick, to see what he would say.   We'll see how he does being put on the spot:

M: How would you describe the last 5 years?
T: Stupendous! :)

M:Where do you see us 5 years from now after 10 years of marriage?
T: Well I reckon we'll be back in the Midwest, we'll have 3.4 children, since that's the national average.
M: I don't think that's the national average I think it's closer to 1.2
T: well....look it up....ok maybe you're right
M: (smiling)
T: The .4 could also be a cool dog like Kona and we'll be going on an anniversary trip to someplace warm and relaxing and you will probably get the majority say in where that'll be.

M:What's one of your favorite things about our five years together?
T: (He was distracted by a fight on tv)  Having someone to come home to and Lincoln's dance he does when I come home from work

M:What do you miss about our life together before we were parents?
T:Freedom
M: to do what
T:or I guess more like flexibility with schedules etc.

M:What have you learned after being married to me for 5 whole years?
T: That you don't like scarasm and I hate hanging curtain rods (I have two ready to go for him to hang up in our bedroom, they've been sitting there for over a month now, I'm being good and not nagging him to do it :)

M: What do you remember about our wedding day?
T: Being in a daze, I don't really remember a whole lot except how beautiful you looked walking down the aisle...
M: awww

M:What do you remember about proposing?
T: Being nervous and excited
M: that's a pretty generic answer
T: Well actually I was tired from running up the stupid hill (said defensively) and you laughing instead of saying yes right away
M: What can I say, I was giddy :) and it didn't take long at all for me to say yes!

M: Are you sick of these questions?
T: No (said sarcastically)
M: Was that sarcastic?
T: No (said even more sarcastically)
M: You sure?
T: yeah :)

Here are some pictures from our wedding day....

We LOVE Deanna!  She owns Dream Designs in Aurora, NE where I got my dress, bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, candle lighter dresses, veil, unity candle and holders, etc. and I was honored that she was able to attend our wedding and even when Hope had trouble bustling my dress before the reception, Deanna walked in just in time and we recruited her help!  She definitely goes above and beyond your normal bridal shop owner!

Some of our awesome friends from Wichita that drove the 4 hours to our wedding!  We were so blessed to have them all there!

Some of my awesome Volleyball team from Hastings College that were able to come to the wedding!  Miss you all!

Here is the slideshow of Tyler and I as we grew up and then us together while we were dating.  We played it at our wedding.....warning it's over 11 minutes long! :)  Brings back so many memories!
